The First Technical Challenge We Faced Building an AI Tutor

Building an AI learning companion is not always simple. Our founder shares an early technical challenge and what Buddy with Me learned from it.

As Buddy with Me grew from 10 to 25 beta users, we quickly learned an important lesson:

Building helpful technology is not only about making it work. It is about making it work well for real students.

One of our earliest technical challenges involved consistency.

Sometimes, a student would ask a clear question and receive a thoughtful, step-by-step explanation. Other times, the response could be too detailed, too broad, or not quite matched to the student’s grade level and learning moment.

That was not good enough.

A student who is already overwhelmed does not need a long, complicated answer. They need clarity. They need one helpful next step.

So we went back to the product experience and asked better questions:

  • How can Buddy with Me recognize when a student needs a shorter explanation?
  • How can it encourage students without sounding repetitive?
  • How can it help a student think through an answer instead of simply giving one?
  • How can the experience feel more supportive when a student is stuck?

The solution was not one quick fix. It required ongoing testing, reviewing feedback, adjusting how the product guides conversations, and learning from the ways real students use the tool.

This is why beta users are so valuable.

Every time a student uses Buddy with Me in a way we did not expect, we learn something. Every time a parent says, “This part was helpful, but this part was confusing,” we get a chance to improve.

Technology should not ask students to adapt to it. Good technology should work harder to adapt to students.

We are still learning, still testing, and still improving. That is what building responsibly looks like.
