Building Buddy with Me: Improving AI Tutor Response Times

As our beta community grew, we faced another challenge that many students would immediately understand:

Waiting for help when you are already frustrated is hard.

During testing, we noticed that some conversations took longer than they should. A student would ask for help with a homework question, and the response time was not always as quick or smooth as we wanted.

For a student who is trying to stay focused, even a short delay can matter.

A delay can interrupt momentum. It can create frustration. It can make a student feel like giving up on the task altogether.

We knew we needed to improve.

Our team began looking closely at how Buddy with Me handled requests, how the learning experience moved from one question to the next, and where we could simplify the process. We worked on making the experience feel more responsive while continuing to prioritize clear, thoughtful, and supportive guidance.

This was a valuable reminder that good educational technology is not only about intelligence. It is also about timing.

Students need support when they are ready to learn—not after the moment has passed.

We also learned that the best technical improvements often come from real feedback. Our beta users did not just tell us that something was slow. They helped us understand the impact. They showed us that speed is not simply a performance number. It affects whether a student stays engaged.

We are continuing to improve Buddy with Me with that in mind
